About Us

Babylon Quartet is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is redefining what a string quartet can do. Babylon Quartet presents a one-of-a-kind concert experience through their fresh programming and a kaleidoscopic array of singular skills and deft surprises along the way. Their considerable repertoire and concert offerings span genres, from Haydn to Stravinsky; from Beethoven to Britten; from The Beatles to Radiohead as well as new commissions and original compositions – both those premiered and in development today. Classically trained and passionate about new and about traditional repertoire, Babylon Quartet’s musical odyssey has carried them through early music, the great pillars of the quartet repertoire, as well as through major works of the 20th Century, and into a rich world of contemporary commissions integrating electronics, dance, drama, video and more into their performances. Babylon Quartet are also an engine of original content creation; members of Babylon Quartet have composed original works and created new arrangements of existing music for the ensemble which have been performed in countries across Europe from The Netherlands, France, Portugal, Austria, Lithuania and more.

Babylon Quartet was awarded the grand prize at Het Grote Kamermuziek Prijs De Doelen 2015, and has since appeared on some of the most prestigious stages of Europe: Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; De Doelen, Rotterdam; TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht; Casa de Musìca, Porto, Joseph Haydn Hall, Vienna; The Arsenal, Vilnius and many more. In December of 2016, Babylon Quartet was scouted for the prestigious Kersjesfonds Prijs for their superb performing and game changing original programming. In a ceremony at Het Koninklijk Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Babylon Quartet premiered two original works for string quartet and live electronics (Mirrors and The River) and was awarded a generous bursary for their development which has positioned them to become one of the most exciting and innovative young ensembles in Europe. Babylon Quartet premiered another original work titled Ghosts in a showcase at the Classical:NEXT 2016 exposition in De Doelen, Rotterdam, where they were invited to share their expertise and innovation in the field of performing with live electronics.

Their extensive festival debuts include Janine Jansen Internationaal Kamermuziek Festival, Utrecht; HARMOS Festival, Porto; International Chamber Music Festival, The Hague; BumaClassical, Utrecht; Festival Classique, The Hague; Travelling Baroque, Amsterdam; Grachtenfestival, Amsterdam; Delft Chamber Music Festival, Delft; Klassiek op het Amstelveld Festival, Amsterdam; and more.
